Maasai Mara: Africa's Most Famous Wildlife Reserve

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is the centrepiece of Kenya's wildlife tourism and one of the most celebrated safari destinations on earth. Covering 1,510 square kilometres in Kenya's southwest, it forms the northern extension of Tanzania's Serengeti ecosystem - a continuous, unfenced wilderness where wildlife moves freely across an ancient landscape.

The Mara has earned its global reputation for good reason. Lion densities here are among the highest in Africa. Leopard sightings, rare in many parks, are relatively common along the Mara River corridors. Cheetah are spotted regularly on the open plains. And from July to October, the reserve hosts the climax of the Great Migration — the river crossings that have become one of the most photographed wildlife events in the world.

The Great Migration: Nature's Greatest Show

Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and hundreds of thousands of gazelle complete a 1,800-kilometre circular journey between the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. The Mara River crossings - typically most intense in July, August, and September - are the migration's most dramatic chapter. Crocodiles wait in the shallows. Lions position themselves on the banks. The crossings can last minutes or hours, and no two are alike.

Even outside migration season, the Mara delivers exceptional game viewing year-round. Resident wildlife, permanent water sources, and the reserve's open plains make it one of the most reliable destinations in Africa for Big Five sightings.

Best Time to Visit the Maasai Mara

The Maasai Mara is productive year-round, but the peak season runs from July to October, when the Great Migration is present and dry conditions concentrate wildlife around water sources. January to March offers excellent predator activity with smaller crowds. April to June (the long rains) sees fewer visitors and lower rates — the landscape is lush and dramatic.
