An 8-day group joining safari covering the Masai Mara with two consecutive full game drive days, Lake Nakuru, Lake Naivasha, and Amboseli, returning to Nairobi. The two Masai Mara full days allow the guide to cover the Mara Triangle, Mara River, and central plains comprehensively. From USD 1,020 per person, this is the longest group joining circuit in this itinerary series and the best option for guests who want maximum Masai Mara time alongside the broader Kenya circuit.

Who Is This Safari For?
Ideal for: Travellers who want maximum Masai Mara time: two full game drive days rather than one
Ideal for: Those who want the best chance of witnessing a Migration river crossing (July to October) by spending two Mara days
Ideal for: First-time Kenya safari visitors with 8 days who want the complete Kenya group joining circuit
Not ideal: those on a tight budget; the 6-day version covers the same parks at a lower cost with one Mara day
Not ideal: those wanting private vehicle flexibility throughout
Why Two Masai Mara Days Matter
A single full Mara day gives you one morning and one afternoon drive. The guide covers the central plains and Mara River comprehensively but has no second chance to follow up on sightings from the previous day or to position differently based on what the wildlife network reports overnight.
Two consecutive Mara days change the dynamic. Day 2 in the Mara, the guide uses the previous day's knowledge to position for specific predator follow-ups: the cheetah coalition seen heading north yesterday, the leopard that retreated into the riverine tree at midday, the lion pride that was active near the crossing point. The second day consistently produces encounters that a single day cannot.
For visitors travelling during the Migration months of July to October, two Mara days also significantly increase the probability of witnessing a river crossing, which can require holding position at the river for several hours across multiple drives before the herds commit to crossing.
Health and safety note: General guidance only. Consult a travel health clinic before international travel.
Kenya is a malarial zone. Antimalarial medication and DEET-based repellent are recommended throughout.
Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for most nationalities. Arrange at etakenya.go.ke before travel.
Travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation cover is required as a condition of booking with us.
The Compound Effect: What a Second Masai Mara Day Actually Produces
Most safari guides treat a two-day Mara visit as two versions of the same day. Leave camp at 06:30, cover the central plains and Mara River, return at 16:00. Repeat.
Katulu guides do not do this. Day 2 in the Mara is intelligence gathering. The guide notes which lion pride was active in which territory, where the cheetah coalition was at 07:00 and where it moved by 10:00, whether the herds at the northern crossing point are building or dispersing. He notes the specific tree where a leopard made a kill and retreated with the carcass at midday. He files all of this.
Day 3 opens with that intelligence applied. He does not drive to the central plains and wait to see what appears. He drives to the territory where the lion pride was active before dawn, based on where they were when he drove past at 17:00 the day before. He drives to the sausage tree where the leopard cached the carcass, on the chance it is still there at first light. When other vehicles are heading to the same viewing areas they always use, he goes somewhere different, because he knows something they do not.
This is the real value of a second Mara day. Not more time in the same place, but the conversion of observation into knowledge into a better game drive.
On day 3 morning, the guide turns away from the other vehicles heading south toward the central plains. He drives north. Twenty minutes later, on a rocky kopje above the Mara River, there is a leopard in a sausage tree with the hindquarters of a Thomson's gazelle draped over a branch. The guide noted the tree yesterday at 14:20 when the leopard was still feeding. He drove past it at 17:00 and the carcass was still there. He went to it first this morning before the radio reports had even started. Four vehicles arrive within ten minutes of us. We had it alone for those ten minutes. That is what the second day produces.
Why travellers choose this itinerary
- Two consecutive Masai Mara days with compounding guide intelligence: day 3 is structured around what day 2 revealed
- During Migration season (July to October), two Mara days provides a realistic probability of witnessing a river crossing
- Most complete Kenya group joining circuit: five ecosystems across eight days at USD 1,020 per person all-inclusive
- The guide's two-day knowledge advantage in the Mara consistently produces encounter quality that a single-day visit cannot replicate
Best Time to Visit

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Using the second Mara day to revisit exactly the same routes as day 2
Fix: The second Mara day is most productive when the guide covers different zones. Tell your guide at breakfast on day 3 that you want to explore areas not covered on day 2. The guide's overnight intelligence shapes which new areas are most promising.
Mistake 2: Not being at the vehicle for the 06:30 Mara departure on both game drive days
Fix: Two full game drive days both require 06:30 departure to maximise the morning light window. Habitual late risers reduce the most productive wildlife hours of both days for the whole group.
Mistake 3: Treating the Naivasha overnight as wasted time
Fix: Lake Naivasha is genuinely pleasant: hippo activity from the shore, fish eagle calls, and the Rift Valley escarpment visible from the lake surface. An optional boat ride and Hell's Gate cycling on day 6 add active content to the Naivasha night.
Mistake 4: Skipping the Amboseli Kilimanjaro dawn window on day 7
Fix: Day 7 is the last full game drive day. The Kilimanjaro window in the marsh at 06:00 is the most photographically distinctive experience on this itinerary. Set the alarm. It is worth it.

Full Day Game Drive in the Masai Mara, Day 1
Depart 06:30. Full day game drive. Picnic lunch boxes at the Mara River. The guide covers the central plains, Mara Triangle, and Mara River corridor, building a picture of current predator territories and herd movements. Resident lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, and buffalo. Migration crossings possible July to October. Return by 16:00. Dinner and overnight.
Great Migration note: Two full Mara days significantly improves the probability of witnessing a river crossing.
River crossings cannot be guaranteed. Your guide tracks herd positions and positions accordingly.
Year-round resident wildlife makes the Mara excellent in every season regardless of migration timing.
Full Day Game Drive in the Masai Mara, Day 2
Depart 06:30. Second consecutive full day game drive. The guide uses overnight network intelligence and yesterday's sighting positions to structure today's route. Follow-up on specific predators and herds identified on day 2. If river crossings are the priority, the guide positions at the most active crossing point and holds as conditions develop. Picnic lunch. Return by 16:00. Dinner and overnight.
Katulu guide note: The second Masai Mara day is where guide intelligence compounds. We know from day 2 which lion pride was active north of the Sekenani, which cheetah coalition was hunting at dawn, and which crossing point the herds were approaching. Day 3 opens with that information rather than starting fresh. For dramatic sightings, the second day is often the better of the two.
