Who Is This Safari For?
Ideal for: Active travellers who want cycling through Hell's Gate Gorge alongside the classic safari circuit
Ideal for: Those who want four distinct Kenya ecosystems in one group joining itinerary
Ideal for: Travellers who want the Naivasha and Hell's Gate experience in addition to the flagship parks
Not ideal: those who want to skip the cycling activity; Hell's Gate on this itinerary is optional but the day structure is built around it
Not ideal: those wanting multiple Mara game drive days; the 8-day version adds a second full Mara day
What Makes the 7-Day Circuit Different
The 6-day version of this circuit covers the Mara, Nakuru, and Amboseli. The 7-day adds Lake Naivasha with its hippo shoreline and the option of Hell's Gate National Park cycling. Hell's Gate is one of the only parks in Kenya where visitors cycle unescorted on the park floor among zebra, giraffe, and buffalo. The gorge walls rise 100 metres on each side. It is a completely different sensory experience from a game drive.
Health and safety note: General guidance only. Consult a travel health clinic before international travel.
Kenya is a malarial zone. Antimalarial medication and DEET-based repellent are recommended throughout.
Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for most nationalities. Arrange at etakenya.go.ke before travel.
Travel insurance with emergency medical evacuation cover is required as a condition of booking with us.
Hell's Gate: The Only Safari You Do On a Bicycle
Every other activity on this seven-day itinerary is conducted from inside a vehicle. You observe wildlife through glass, across a gap that is always present. The experience is extraordinary. But it is always mediated.
Hell's Gate removes the vehicle entirely. You cycle on the park floor on a bicycle hired at the gate for approximately USD 15. The zebra is not 50 metres away: it is 8 metres away. The giraffe does not look up at the sound of an engine because there is no engine. The Maasai giraffe at Hell's Gate has seen cyclists before and has decided that cyclists are not interesting. You can stop and watch it eat from an acacia tree at close range, without glass, without the sound of an idling 4WD, in actual silence.
Then the gorge section begins. The track drops into a slot canyon with basalt walls rising 100 metres overhead. Geothermal steam vents in the rock floor. Fischer's Tower, a volcanic plug 25 metres high, stands at the canyon entrance. Lammergeier vultures, with 2.8-metre wingspans, ride the thermals off the warm canyon walls overhead.
No game drive produces this. It is a categorically different encounter with the natural world, and it is available in Kenya at one location only.
The gorge at Hell's Gate has a quality that no other place on this itinerary has: enclosure. The open plains of the Masai Mara, the Rift Valley panoramas, the Amboseli marsh: all of them are defined by their openness, their sky. The gorge is the opposite. The walls press in. The light narrows to a strip overhead. The steam rises from the rock in slow columns. You are on a bicycle, in a slot canyon, in a national park, in Kenya, and it is completely unlike what you thought a safari would be.
Why travellers choose this itinerary
- Hell's Gate cycling is the only game drive alternative in Kenya that puts you in the park on foot and bicycle rather than inside a vehicle
- Seven days gives room for both the Naivasha lakeside evening and the Hell's Gate gorge morning without compressing either
- The progression from the Mara's open scale to Hell's Gate's gorge enclosure to Amboseli's mountain backdrop covers Kenya's full environmental range
- Hell's Gate is optional: guests who prefer not to cycle can relax at Naivasha or take a boat ride while others cycle

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Assuming Hell's Gate is included in the package price
Fix: The park entry fee and bicycle hire for Hell's Gate are paid at the gate on the day. Budget approximately USD 20 per person in addition to the package price.
Mistake 2: Not wearing appropriate footwear for the gorge walk
Fix: The gorge walk section of Hell's Gate involves uneven rocky terrain. Flip-flops and sandals are not suitable. Closed-toe shoes or light hiking shoes are required. Pack these in your day bag even if you are primarily using safari boots for game drives.
Mistake 3: Not rising early for the Amboseli Kilimanjaro window
Fix: Day 6 morning drive at 06:00 targets the Kilimanjaro window before cloud builds. This is the single most photographed wildlife view in Kenya. Protect the early departure.
Mistake 4: Trying to do the boat ride and Hell's Gate on the same morning
Fix: Day 5 morning is tight: Hell's Gate cycling takes approximately 3 hours, and the drive to Amboseli is 4 to 5 hours. A boat ride on the same morning makes the schedule unfeasible. Choose one: Hell's Gate or the boat ride.
