Nakuru and the Mara: Why This Combination Works
These two parks are ecological opposites, and that is precisely why visiting them back-to-back works.
The Masai Mara is open. Big sky. Grass in every direction. Predators visible from 500 metres. The experience is one of exposure and scale. The Mara River is the drama: a wide, fast-moving crocodile river where a million wildebeest cross every year and everything watching them wants to eat them.
Lake Nakuru is enclosed. The park is compact, walled by escarpment and dense acacia woodland. The lake itself is alkaline, pink-tinged by algae when flamingos are present. The rhino is found in a fenced sanctuary where a ranger knows which individual is which. The experience is one of concentration and intimacy.
The Rift Valley escarpment between them is the geological seam. Standing at the viewpoint on the drive north on day 3, you can see the valley floor 600 metres below, the lake a silver oval in the distance. This is the view that separates the two parks and explains, in one panorama, why Kenya looks the way it does.
This is not two parks that happen to be near each other. It is two parks that make each other more interesting.
The Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint stops people mid-sentence. You have left the Masai Mara's flat horizon behind, driven north for two hours, and suddenly the road reaches the edge. Below, 600 metres down, the valley floor stretches with no visible end. Lake Nakuru is a silver oval in the distance. The guide lets the vehicle sit. Nobody reaches for a camera immediately. Some things take a moment.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Expecting a game drive on day 1 afternoon
Fix: Day 1 is a travel day. The Nairobi to Mara drive is 5 hours. Afternoon arrival does not allow a productive game drive. The full game drive day is day 2.
Mistake 2: Not specifying wildlife priorities to the guide at dinner on day 1
Fix: The guide briefing on day 1 evening is the right moment to tell your guide what you most want to see. Lion, leopard, cheetah hunt, or river crossing positioning: state your priority clearly and the guide shapes day 2 around it.
Mistake 3: Missing the Nakuru morning game drive timing
Fix: The Nakuru game drive departs at 06:00 on day 4 and runs 4 hours before the Nairobi return drive. The park gate opens at 06:00. Being ready at the vehicle at 05:50 means the guide can be first through the gate and into the park before other vehicles arrive.
Mistake 4: Not checking the Kenya ETA before departure
Fix: Kenya requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation for most nationalities. Arrange it at etakenya.go.ke before travel. The process takes 3 to 5 business days for approval.
