Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Booking only one night in the Masai Mara

Fix: One night in the Mara gives you two game drives. The reserve is large and varied. Two nights minimum is the standard recommendation for a meaningful experience. This 6-day itinerary gives two Mara nights. If you want a third, use the 7-day version.

Mistake 2: Not asking about the Kilimanjaro viewing window at Amboseli

Fix: Most guests learn about the morning Kilimanjaro window only after they have missed it. The peak is clearest from just after sunrise until about nine in the morning. Tell your guide on arrival that you want to position for the best mountain view in the morning drive.

Mistake 3: Planning beach activities from Mombasa on the afternoon of arrival

Fix: The drive from Tsavo East to Mombasa takes approximately three hours and arrives in the early to mid-afternoon depending on the morning drive finish. Allow the first afternoon to rest and check into your beach accommodation before planning any activities.

Mistake 4: Arriving at Tsavo East without asking about the Galana River drive

Fix: Many Tsavo East day drives focus on the central plains. The Galana River corridor is where predators, crocodiles, hippos, and elephants concentrate. Ask your guide specifically to include a Galana River section in the Tsavo drive. Morning is the most productive time.
