Ideal for: Travellers who want a genuine night wildlife viewing experience in montane forest
Ideal for: Anyone with four days who wants an introduction to northern Kenya

Not ideal: those whose main goal is Migration or Big Five coverage; this safari is about depth and rarity, not volume

Why This Safari

Most Kenya visitors see the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Lake Nakuru. Very few see the Aberdare National Park or Samburu Game Reserve. Those who do consistently describe them as their favourite Kenya wildlife experiences. Not because the wildlife is more dramatic than the Mara, but because the experiences are completely different from anything else the country offers.

The Aberdare tree lodge is built above a natural waterhole and salt lick in the montane forest. From the elevated viewing decks, you watch wildlife arrive throughout the night: elephant, buffalo, black rhino, giant forest hog, and if luck holds, the bongo antelope, one of Africa's rarest forest species, found in significant numbers only in the Aberdare forest and Mount Kenya. The experience is passive and extraordinary: you sit warm and dry above the action as the forest delivers the sightings without any effort on your part.

Samburu is Kenya's northern endemics park. The reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich are all present here and found almost nowhere else in Kenya. Katulu Africa Safaris guides know the Samburu species and their territories, knowledge built from consistent time in a reserve that most southern-focused operators visit rarely.

Katulu on Samburu: We run Samburu departures consistently and know the specific guide radio network that tracks individual animal family groups in the reserve. Leopard sightings in Samburu are among the most reliable in Kenya. The cats are well-habituated and frequently visible in the riverine trees in late afternoon.

Tour Description

The route arcs north from Nairobi: up through the central highlands to the Aberdares, then northeast to Samburu, returning south to Nairobi. The full four-day circuit introduces two ecosystems that look and function nothing like the savannah parks most international visitors experience.

The Aberdare National Park is a high-altitude montane forest at 7,000 feet. The park's wildlife is different from the open-country species: giant forest hog, giant bongo antelope, black rhino in the forest interior, and the tree hyrax that calls from the canopy at night. The Samburu Game Reserve is dry and hot, sitting in Kenya's arid north on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Tipping Guide (per person): Guide: USD 10-20/day x 3 days = approximately USD 30-60 total
Camp staff (shared): USD 5-10/day x 3 days = approximately USD 15-30 total
Suggested total tip budget per person: USD 45-90
Tips are discretionary and appreciated, not mandatory.

Medical and health note: General guidance only. This is not medical advice. Consult a travel health clinic before departure.
Both parks are in areas where malaria is a risk, particularly Samburu in the arid north.
Antimalarial medication and DEET-based repellent are recommended for the full itinerary.
All safari camps provide mosquito nets. The Aberdare at altitude is less malarial but repellent is still advisable.

Best Time to Visit

Season Months Aberdare Samburu Recommendation
Dry Season Jan to Mar and Jul to Oct Waterhole attendance concentrated; good forest visibility; animals drink frequently Ewaso Nyiro River concentrates wildlife; predators active; good viewing Best for both parks. Recommended for first visits.
Short Rains Nov to Dec Waterhole still operational throughout year; some forest tracks muddy Animals spread more widely but river remains productive Good all-round conditions.
Long Rains Apr to May Some forest tracks impassable; tree lodge accessible via lodge vehicle Animals disperse slightly; green landscape; accessible Low season. Budget option. Not recommended for first visits.

Samburu produces reliable wildlife in every month because the Ewaso Nyiro River provides permanent water year-round. The Aberdare tree lodge operates throughout the year.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Not requesting a specific wake-up species at The Ark

Fix: The night staff at The Ark check the waterhole continuously throughout the night. If you do not submit a wake-up species request, you may sleep through an elephant or rhino visit you would have wanted to see. Go to the front desk on arrival and list your priority species for night alerts.

Mistake 2: Underpacking for the Aberdare at altitude

Fix: The Aberdare is at 7,000 feet and cold at night, regardless of Kenya's equatorial location. Guests who arrive without warm layers are uncomfortable on the viewing decks. Pack a heavy fleece or down jacket, warm socks, and a hat specifically for the tree lodge night.

Mistake 3: Treating Samburu as a backup plan rather than a destination

Fix: Some guests plan this route because they could not get Masai Mara accommodation. Those guests consistently report Samburu as the highlight of their Kenya trip. Go to Samburu expecting it to deliver something genuinely extraordinary. It will.

Mistake 4: Not asking the guide about Python Cave in the Silale area

Fix: Python Cave near the Samburu south zone houses a resident population of African rock pythons. This sighting requires guide knowledge to locate and is one of the more unusual wildlife encounters in Kenya. If your guide does not include it automatically, ask specifically for a Python Cave visit.

Day-by-Day Safari Itinerary

Nairobi to Aberdare National Park

Depart Nairobi after breakfast. The 220-kilometre drive north takes approximately three and a half hours through coffee and tea country to the Aberdare Country Club on the slopes of Mweiga Hill. Lunch at the Country Club, then transfer by lodge vehicle into the Aberdare National Park to The Ark tree lodge.

The Ark is a purpose-built tree lodge positioned above a natural waterhole and salt lick in the forest at 7,000 feet. Once inside, you do not leave until the following morning. The waterhole is floodlit throughout the night. A buzzer system alerts guests when significant species arrive. Put in a wake-up request at the front desk for any species on your priority list. The night staff check the waterhole consistently throughout the night and will wake you if elephants, rhino, or bongo appear.

Accommodation Options:

  • Budget: Outspan Hotel (budget rooms)
  • Mid-range: Aberdare Country Club / The Ark (standard)
  • Luxury: The Ark (luxury rooms) / Treetops Lodge / Serena Mountain Lodge

Aberdare Night Viewing Through Morning Then Drive to Samburu

The night continues productively into the early hours. After a morning viewing session and breakfast back at the Aberdare Country Club, the safari vehicle heads northeast toward Samburu Game Reserve. The drive covers approximately 200 kilometres and takes four to five hours through the transitional landscape north of Mount Kenya.

The physical transition from the cool, green central highlands to the hot, open Samburu scrubland is one of the more striking road experiences in Kenya. Vegetation shifts from highland bush to dry acacia scrubland as altitude drops and temperature rises. Arrival at Samburu in time for an afternoon drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Accommodation Options:

  • Budget: Samburu Sopa Lodge (standard)
  • Mid-range: Samburu Serena Safari Lodge / Samburu Game Lodge / Sentrim Samburu

Luxury: Saruni Samburu / Elephant Bedroom Camp / Sasaab Lodge

Full Day Samburu

Two full game drives in Samburu. The morning drive covers the Ewaso Nyiro River banks, where leopards rest in the riverine trees in the morning and lions drink in the early hours. Reticulated giraffe are reliably seen within the first hour of any morning drive. Their coat pattern is strikingly different from the Masai giraffe of southern Kenya. Bold mosaic shapes with sharp, well-defined white borders.

The afternoon drive explores the open scrubland where the northern endemic species concentrate. Grevy's zebra are significantly larger than the plains zebra of the south and move in smaller family units. The gerenuk feeds standing upright on its hind legs, reaching acacia branches that no other browser can access. Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich complete a species list that no southern Kenya park can replicate. Your guide will name the specific families and explain the behavioural differences from the more familiar southern species.

Accommodation Options:

  • Budget: Samburu Sopa Lodge (standard)
  • Mid-range: Samburu Serena Safari Lodge / Samburu Game Lodge / Sentrim Samburu
  • Luxury: Saruni Samburu / Elephant Bedroom Camp / Sasaab Lodge

Samburu Morning Drive and Return to Nairobi

Final game drive in Samburu before breakfast, then departure south for Nairobi. The drive covers approximately 350 kilometres and takes four to five hours. Arrival in Nairobi in the early afternoon. Drop-off at your hotel, the airport, or any Nairobi address.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tree lodge and how does the night viewing work?

A tree lodge is a multi-level structure built above a natural waterhole and salt lick. The Ark in the Aberdare is the best-known example in Kenya. Guests view from elevated decks and a ground-level bunker throughout the night. The waterhole is floodlit. Animals arrive voluntarily. A buzzer system allows the night staff to alert specific guests when priority species appear. Request your wake-up species at the front desk on arrival.

What is the bongo antelope?

The bongo is one of Africa’s rarest forest antelopes: a large, chestnut-coloured animal with distinctive white vertical stripes, found in dense montane forest. In Kenya, the Aberdare is the primary habitat. Bongo are nocturnal and extremely elusive. A sighting at the waterhole is among Kenya’s rarest and most sought-after wildlife encounters. We cannot promise a bongo sighting, but the Aberdare is the right place to be for one.

What makes Samburu different from the Masai Mara?

Samburu holds species not reliably found in southern Kenya. The reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx, and Somali ostrich are all northern endemics. Leopard sightings are among the most consistent in Kenya. The dry northern landscape looks nothing like the Mara’s open grassland. Visitors who have done the Mara and want to add different species to their Kenya experience consistently rate Samburu as their favourite additional park.

Is the drive from Aberdare to Samburu long?

Approximately four to five hours and 200 kilometres. The road is paved for most of the route. The drive passes through interesting transitional landscape as altitude drops and vegetation shifts from highland forest to arid scrubland. Your guide uses the transit time to brief the group on Samburu’s species and what to watch for on arrival.

Do I need to stay awake all night at the tree lodge?

No. Sleep normally and use the buzzer system for wake-up calls when specific species arrive. Many guests alternate between brief waterhole viewing sessions and sleep, finding that the night delivers its most significant sightings in irregular intervals rather than continuous action. The lodge viewing decks are accessible from your room at any hour.
