Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Not descending early into the Ngorongoro Crater

Fix: The 6-hour vehicle limit on the crater floor means that a 10:00 descent gives only until 16:00, which wastes the best morning wildlife activity window. An early descent through the Seneto gate by 06:30 to 07:00 gives the full productive morning on the floor. Submit your descent time request at the lodge on arrival.

Mistake 2: Assuming the Migration is always in one location

Fix: The Migration is a year-round cycle. The herds follow a predictable annual loop driven by rainfall and grass growth, but their exact position changes week by week. Tell your guide your travel dates well in advance and ask specifically where the herds are expected to be. The guide adjusts the Serengeti routing accordingly.

Mistake 3: Not bringing a warm layer for the Ngorongoro rim

Fix: The crater rim sits at 2,200 metres elevation. Mornings are cold regardless of season, with temperatures that can drop to 8 to 10 degrees Celsius before sunrise. A fleece or light jacket is not optional; it is necessary for the early morning descent.

Mistake 4: Booking internal flights without confirming luggage restrictions

Fix: If internal Tanzania flights are part of your wider itinerary, most East Africa light aircraft operators require soft-sided luggage under 15 kg. Hard-shell suitcases are not accepted on bush flights. Pack soft bags before you leave home if your itinerary includes any fly-in components.
