Why Samburu

Samburu National Reserve sits 320 kilometres north of Nairobi in semi-arid northern Kenya, centred on the Ewaso Nyiro River. The ecosystem is fundamentally different from anything in the south. This is dry acacia scrubland with doum palm groves and riverine forest, not open savannah. That difference is why Samburu holds species that simply do not exist in the Masai Mara, Amboseli, or Nakuru.

The Samburu Special Five are five animals adapted to the harsh conditions of Kenya's arid north. The reticulated giraffe has a dramatically different coat from the Masai giraffe, with a distinct mosaic of geometric patches rather than irregular blotches. The Grevy's zebra is considerably larger than the plains zebra, with narrow vertical stripes and a white belly. The gerenuk feeds standing upright on its hind legs, browsing on acacia branches that other antelopes cannot reach. The Beisa oryx is a striking antelope adapted to move long distances with minimal water. The Somali ostrich has a blue-grey neck and blue legs in breeding condition, unlike the pink-necked common ostrich.

Beyond the Special Five, Samburu is widely regarded among Kenya's strongest leopard destinations. The riverine forest along the Ewaso Nyiro provides prime leopard habitat and guides who know the areas where resident leopards are commonly found. Morning drives along the river offer some of Kenya's strongest leopard opportunities, with guides targeting the specific riverine trees where resident leopards commonly rest after night activity.

Samburu-specific packing notes: Samburu temperatures range from around 16 to 18C at night to 29 to 32C midday. Layers are essential.
Dust is significant in the dry season. A dust-proof bag for your camera and a bandana or light scarf for the drive are recommended.
Neutral or khaki colours blend with the environment and avoid disturbing wildlife. Avoid bright colours and camouflage patterns.
The Ewaso Nyiro riverbank can be muddy after rain. Closed-toe shoes are better than sandals for riverbank stops.

Best Time to Visit

Samburu delivers consistent game viewing year-round because the Ewaso Nyiro River is a permanent water source that concentrates wildlife regardless of season. That said, some months are significantly better than others.

How to Book

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid

Mistake 1: Expecting Samburu to look and feel like the Masai Mara

Fix: The two reserves are fundamentally different ecosystems. Guests who arrive at Samburu expecting it to be a northern version of the Mara are consistently surprised by how different it is. The landscape, the light, the species, and the game drive character are all distinct. Arrive with Samburu on its own terms and it over-delivers.

Mistake 2: Leaving Nairobi too late on day 1

Fix: A 06:00 to 07:00 departure from Nairobi allows arrival at Samburu in time for lunch and the afternoon game drive. Leaving after 09:00 means arriving late afternoon with no game drive on day 1. The afternoon drive on day 1 is valuable: the light is excellent and the animals are active. Maximise it with an early start.

Mistake 3: Not specifying leopard and Special Five as priorities before the drives

Fix: Tell your guide at the start of the trip which species are at the top of your list. Guides adjust their route, timing, and pacing based on stated priorities. A guide who knows leopard is your primary target will spend more time on the specific river trees where known individuals rest.

Mistake 4: Crossing into Buffalo Springs without a second entry ticket

Fix: Buffalo Springs National Reserve is immediately across the Ewaso Nyiro and your guide may suggest a crossing for a different landscape perspective. This requires a separate entry ticket from Samburu. If a Buffalo Springs crossing is on your plan, confirm in advance with your guide and ensure the fee is included in or added to your package.
