Why This Safari
The Masai Mara is an exceptional wildlife reserve in every month of the year. The Masai Mara consistently delivers some of Africa's strongest predator sightings year-round. Cheetah, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, and crocodile are all permanent residents. If you travel between July and October, the Great Migration river crossings are an additional spectacle. Tour Description
The route is geographically logical and efficient. You start where most Nairobi-based safaris start: the Masai Mara to the southwest, and spend three nights there before crossing south into Tanzania. Arusha is the Tanzania hub. From there, Tarangire opens the Tanzania section, followed by Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
Tanzania's four parks cover different ecosystems and deliver different experiences. Tarangire is baobab country and elephant country, holding one of Africa's largest dry-season elephant concentrations gathers here. Ngorongoro is one of the world's largest intact volcanic calderas, holding resident wildlife year-round in extraordinary density. The Serengeti is scale: 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah where the same wildebeest herds that crossed the Mara River in Kenya are moving south.
The route ends in Arusha, from where guests depart independently or add a Zanzibar beach extension, which Katulu Africa Safaris can arrange as part of the booking.

Common Safari Planning Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake 1: Arriving in Nairobi on the same day the safari departs
Fix: Build in at least one buffer night in Nairobi before departure day. International flights are frequently delayed, and a missed departure day cannot be recovered without disrupting the entire group.
Mistake 2: Assuming the Migration will be in the Masai Mara during your visit
Fix: The Migration is a year-round cycle. River crossings in the Mara occur July to October, but the herds can cross at any point or not at all on any given day. Book the safari for the resident wildlife. Treat a crossing as a bonus.
Mistake 3: Not carrying small denomination USD notes
Fix: Tanzania border fees, Maasai village entry, and many lodge purchases work best in USD cash. ATMs may not be available at border crossings. Carry some small-denomination USD cash as a practical backup for border contingencies and incidental purchases. Confirm current visa payment methods before travel.
Mistake 4: Packing a hard-shell suitcase if you plan to add internal flights
Fix: Light aircraft on East Africa routes do not accept rigid luggage. If there is any chance you will take an internal flight in Tanzania, pack in a soft-sided bag from the start.
Mistake 5: Underestimating the Day 10 Serengeti to Arusha drive
Fix: From the central Serengeti, this drive takes six to eight hours. From the northern Serengeti, allow the full eight or more. If your guide advises departing without a morning game drive to reach Arusha before dark, take that advice.

Morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel. After a group briefing, the vehicle heads southwest toward the Masai Mara, approximately 270 kilometres and five to six hours, crossing the Rift Valley escarpment near Naivasha. You enter the reserve in early afternoon. First game drive introduces you to the grassland ecosystem. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Full Day Masai Mara
Two game drives today: before sunrise and late afternoon. The morning drive catches predators finishing their night activity. Cheetah begin hunting the short-grass plains as the dew dries. Your guide works the Mara River area for hippo and crocodile sightings year-round. Between July and October, river crossings can happen at any point. Patience near active crossing areas is rewarded.
Katulu guides use a radio network connecting vehicles across the reserve. Second Full Day Masai Mara
A second full day in the Mara allows your guide to cover different terrain from day two. The Mara Triangle on the western bank of the Mara River has lower vehicle density than the main reserve and often produces leopard and hyena activity that the busier eastern zones miss. Drive South to Tanzania Border and Arusha
After breakfast, you head south toward the Tanzania border. Your guide assists with border logistics and process navigation at Namanga or Isebania. Carry your yellow fever certificate, as documentation may be checked at Tanzania immigration. If you cannot receive the vaccine, verify what exemption documentation is acceptable for your route before travel.
Internal flights: If you choose to fly any leg of the Tanzania section, most light aircraft on East Africa routes enforce a 15 kg per person luggage limit in a soft-sided bag.

Drive to Tarangire National Park
Two hours southwest of Arusha, Tarangire opens the Tanzania wildlife section. This park is consistently underestimated by first-time Tanzania visitors and consistently loved by those who have been. In dry season, elephant herds of 200 to 400 individuals concentrate along the Tarangire River, one of Africa's largest dry-season elephant gatherings. The ancient baobab trees that frame the river are some of the oldest living things in East Africa, many over a thousand years old. Afternoon game drive along the river circuit.

Full Day Ngorongoro Crater
Early descent through the Seneto gate, aiming for the crater floor by 07:00. The first two hours on the floor before day-trip vehicles arrive are the most productive. Lion prides hunt the Gorigor Swamp area. Black rhino graze the Lerai Forest edge in the early morning. Tell your guide if rhino is a priority: they need the early window.
Vehicle permits limit the amount of time on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. An early descent through the Seneto gate, aiming to arrive before 07:00, maximises your viewing window before day-trip vehicles from Karatu build up mid-morning. Plan your ascent in good time before the park gates close.

Serengeti Morning Drive and Drive to Arusha
A final morning game drive before a midday departure for Arusha. The drive from the central Serengeti takes six to eight hours depending on your camp location and road conditions. If you are based in the northern Serengeti near Kogatende, allow for the full eight hours. Arrival in Arusha in the early evening.
If road conditions are uncertain or you are based in the northern zone, your guide may recommend departing earlier and skipping the morning drive to ensure a comfortable arrival time. This decision is made on the day based on conditions.
